A few years ago, I swore off monthly beauty boxes. I had tried a couple of them (mostly BirchBox and Beauty Heroes) and, while I really enjoyed the anticipation of receiving a monthly box of surprises, I learned that my beauty cabinet does not need a whole bunch of samples cluttering things up. I ended up with a lot of product that I couldn't use up and a healthy serving of guilt to go along with it.
However, last month I was looking around dermstore.com to buy one of my all-time favorite sunscreens. Before I knew it, I was on their BeautyFIX webpage and I was impressed by the value of offerings and range of brands. Since it only cost $25 for a recurring monthly subscription that could be cancelled anytime, I decided to jump back into the subscription box world. So far, I'm really glad I did!!
This is my second month of getting the BeautyFIX box. I think that, overall, I liked the April box better (the theme was natural and organic skincare and included some holy grail Tammy Fender Balm) but I'm still quite pleased the May's offerings.
Full Sized Item: Dr. Brandt Pores No More Luminizer Primer (1 oz)
I'm a big fan of Dr. Brandt and was happy to see a full-sized primer from the brand. I don't typically used a primer but was curious about how it might improve my makeup look. It feels nice and light going on and layers well the all the other products I use in my morning routine. I don't really see much of a luminizing effect, in fact, I'm a little unsure of what it's doing other than maybe making my makeup last longer? I'm going to continue using it for now to see if I fall in love. If I don't, it will actually be a blessing in disguise because my Dermstore wishlist is already a million miles long.
Fillerina Replenishing Gel Grade 2 Filled Applicator (1 ml)
Value: $2.75 (I think? Full-sized product comes with 2 different bottles and so the cost-breakdown is a bit murky.)
This is a nice, gel-like hyaluronic serum that comes in a rather gimmicky syringe with a "precision applicator attachment". The idea is that you use the applicator to apply Fillerina only to the wrinkles you wish to fill. I found it messy and difficult to use in that way and so I ended up just squirting some onto my finger and then applying around my eyes and marionette lines. I've used it twice so far and am happy with the results...hyaluronic acid can decrease the appearance of lines by increasing the skin's hydration. I don't think it's heads and shoulders above other similar serums though, and I won't repurchase due to my dislike of the packaging.
NEUMA neuMoisture Instant Fix (1 oz.)
I actually really liked this hair detangling and protection spray. I deal with a lot of frizz naturally and color-treating my hair has not helped at all. Recently, I've been using Living Proof Restore Protecting Spray which has been fine but not life-changing. I think the NEUMA works better. After washing my hair yesterday, I sprayed a healthy amount from roots to tip and was amazed at how easily I was able to brush through the tangles. One day after shampooing my hair feels soft, nourished, and has almost no frizz!!! I am definitely going to keep this product in constant rotation.
Peter Thomas Roth Mega-Rich Body Cleanser (1 oz.)
Until getting this little sample, I have to admit that I was just using my boyfriend's huge bottle of Everyone's Coconut + Lime Body Soap. I honestly haven't cared much about body washes since high school. I remember going crazy for all the different options at Bath & Bodyworks and am apparently not the only one who looks back on those days with a mixture of nostalgia and regret. That being said, I really liked the citrusy smell of this product and have been looking forward to using it during my shower-time. I don't think it has made much difference for my skin post-shower and I probably won't repurchase due to limited space in the bathroom. But I'm enjoying it while it lasts!!
SkinCeuticals Discoloration Defense (4 ml)
Oh yes, bring on the SkinCeuticals samples please!!! I love this brand and will occasionally even shell out the $$$ for the famous CE Ferulic or Phloretin CF (which works slightly better with my oily T-zone). The new Discoloration Defense has a very light, liquid texture that sinks into the skin very well. I don't personally have worries about dark spots and so I'm thinking of passing the rest along to my mom to see if she likes it. I'm guessing it would take a long period of regular use to see results but the combo of 3% tranexamic acid and 5% niacinamide seems like a winning formulation!
Murad Multi-Vitamin Infusion Oil (3 ml)
I don't really use skin oils very often (see above re: oily T-zone). When I do, I prefer to use something I've put together myself because I feel like most luxury oils out there are a huge rip-off. I will say, though, that I'm really enjoying my sample of this. The smell is just lovely, herbal and light. I'm careful to just use a few drops and it feels really nice on my face. I would consider repurchasing, especially because I like and trust Murad products. However, I have a cabinet full of exotic oils I've bought for my skincare-formulating experiments and can't really justify buying an oil made by someone else. I'll just enjoy this one while it lasts!
Dermablend Mini Setting Powder (3 g)
This seems like a good loose, transparent powder for setting make-up and preventing shine. I currently use the RMS Un-Powder and really like it. This seems similar but get rave review online. I don't use powder every day because I prefer a more "glowy' look but I'm definitely packing this on my next trip because of it's small size and dependability. Will I repurchase? Unsure...it will take me FOREVER to finish this and my Un-Powder.
VMV Hypoallergenics Hydra Balance Smart Moisturizer for Combination Skin (1 fl. oz.)
I had never heard of this brand until getting this BeautyFix and I'm intrigued. The packaging kind of reminded me of Biologique Recherche for some reason and so I assumed it was a French brand...not so, it's actually from New York. They specialize in making products for sensitive and reactive skin. Fortunately, my skin can handle just about anything I throw at it but I like their focus on simple and safe formulations. This lotion has SPF 15 and worked really nicely on my skin with no oiliness or residue. Unfortunately, I'm a stickler for always using SPF 30 especially if I'm spending any time outside. I will probably use this for work days when I'm stuck in the hospital for 12+ hours but then won't repurchase.
Juice Beauty Stem Cellular CC Cream - Desert Glow (.17 oz.)
I had actually gotten a sample of this years ago in a Birch Box and couldn't remember how I had liked it. After using it once, I remembered that I didn't like it much at all. It doesn't agree with my oily skin and I don't like the smell. It doesn't help that the Desert Glow is too light, even for my Caucasian skin so I can imagine it will be the wrong shade for many other subscribers. And for the price...I'll stick with my Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation.
Replenix Plumping Lip Treatment SPF 30 (1.5 ml)
While I can't really say that I noticed any plumping effect from this, I did overall like it. My lips are always chapped and this treatment went on nicely and worked well on its own or over lipstick. I hadn't realized that it has SPF 30 but now that I know I'm going to keep it in my purse during my summer adventures. I probably won't repurchase because of the price.
Tocca Beauty Eau de Parfum - Giulietta (1.5 ml)
Perfume is such a personal thing. I always like trying something new but have to be careful because my boyfriend is allergic to some fragrances. This scent wasn't really for me, too flowery. I'll be passing it along to someone who I hope likes it more!
Overall box value: $97.55
I wasn't as psyched on this month's box as I was for April's but I liked it enough to keep my subscription at least for another month. There was only one product that I would consider repurchasing (NEUMA neuMoisture Instant Fix) but there were several other that I'm going to enjoy while they last. Plus, who doesn't want a monthly box of surprises?? I felt like it was a good value overall with a good range of products and brands.
Tell me...do you get the Dermstore BeautyFIX? What did you think of the box???
I purchased this box with my own money. All thoughts and opinions are strictly my own!
