The most magical part of our trip to Erie may have been the day we drove to Niagara Falls. I don't really know what I expected, but it ended up being so much more.
We splurged and took a trip on the Maid of the Mist, a boat that will steer you right up into the falls. We wore the mandatory blue plastic parkas and got completely soaked by the water spraying off the falls. It was exhilarating.
I was enchanted by the clouds of spray that hung in the air. They looked like friendly smoke monsters from far off.
I didn't know that there were two different falls at Niagara. The ones closest to the American side are called, predictably, the "American Falls". The ones closer to Canada are called the Horseshoe Falls.
We actually lucked out on the weather since it was pouring on the car ride up. There were only a few sprinkles of rain while we were there walking around, nothing a couple Portlanders can't handle.
There were also super cool old buildings on the river. I loved the way the blended in with the rocks.
